How do Psychedelics actually work for healing?

And why does it work better and faster than other relationship-healing methods?

Most couples don’t struggle because they lack insight - they struggle because their nervous systems are stuck in protection.

As humans, we don’t connect with our minds. We connect with our bodies, felt sense, and nervous systems, especially in romantic partnerships.

After repeated rupture, conflict, and betrayal, it’s normal for nervous systems to close off or shut down in self protection - this is what leads to things like defensiveness and resentment.

When couples wonder “Where did the love go and how do we get it back?” the solution is not more “talking it out.” It’s learning how to drop your defenses, re-open your hearts, and repair with your partner from within.

While talk therapy can be supportive for some couples, psychedelic-assisted therapy is the fast-track to creating a renewed bond, sense of intimacy, and true understanding

This can be particularly powerful for partners who have been socialized away from feeling their emotions and tend to rely more on logic. Psychedelics can provide direct access to vulnerability, empathy, and internal insight in a way that is both immediate and undeniable.

This is not about bypassing hard work. It is about creating the conditions that make real relational repair possible.

So what’s the science behind Psychedelics?

Some of our couples are Psychedelic vets, while others are psychedelic-curious or total newbies. We welcome and accept people at all experience levels. But for those of you who are new to Psychedelics, and maybe feel a little fearful or skeptical about Psychedelic medicine or how it works, let’s clear that up.

Most couples come to us because they are in patterns of conflict and poor communication - think defensiveness, shutting down, spiraling, ruminating, and strong emotional reactions. These are all nervous system responses.

The beauty of psychedelics is that they temporarily softens those nervous system responses so that you actually have space and capacity to hear your partner (and for them to hear you!)

Yet, while the reduced brain activity is just temporary, the results can be long lasting because Psychedelics supports neuroplasticity: This is where the brain becomes more flexible and is able to actually rewire neural pathways that have long held stories like, “He doesn’t care.”

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a legal, gentle, FDA-approved medication that has been used safely in hospitals since the 1970s. In recent years, low-dose ketamine therapy has been used to treat depression, PTSD, and anxiety, especially when other treatments haven’t worked.

Ketamine works by reducing activity in the amygdala which is the threat detection part of your brain as well as the default mode network which is where all of that mental looping, ruminating, and spiraling takes place. It helps you to feel less reactive - which is often step one!

What is Psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain mushrooms. In Colorado and Oregon, it is legally available for therapeutic use - which is why attendees fly across the country to attend our retreats!

Psilocybin creates a deeply introspective and expansive state by activating your seretonin receptors (our feel good chemical!) which helps to soften rigid narratives about ourselves and our partners and increases emotional insight.

What results you can expect from them:

Now, you can’t just take Psychedelics on your own and expect long term results. The magic is that our licensed clinicians take advantage of this window of openness to facilitate conversations between couples, process old wounds, and create new relating patterns that last.

When you are in a contained space like a retreat versus a one-off therapy session, these results can go so much deeper. That’s why couples come out of a 3 day retreat and have incredible transformations like:

  • Hear each other for the first time in years

  • Access grief, love, longing, and truth that has been buried

  • Experience connection without armor

  • Repair at the level where the rupture originally occurred

  • Men feel the appreciation they crave, women feel the love they’ve been longing.

I’m nervous to do Ketamine with a group.

This is a really common concern, so let’s break it down!

Contrary to popular belief, research shows that group therapy can be more effective than individual or couples therapy. Group psychedelic therapy has unique benefits such as:

  • Deeper feelings of connection and bonding: Participants share they left not just feeling more connected to their partner, but to the world

  • Faster relational healing and growth: Leveraging other people’s experiences and insights can actually change your neural pathways faster than if you were to do this work with just your partner.

  • Cost/access advantages: An individual couples psychedelic retreat would cost upward of $20K…you are getting an even more effective experience for a fraction of the price.

If you have any specific concerns, we’d be happy to discuss with you 1-1!
